Yokosuka peace organizations express protest against U.S. N-sub Ohio’s entry into port

October 18, 2008
Peace activists from anti-base, women’s, and peace organizations as well as the local Japanese Communist Party in Yokosuka on October 17 visited the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture to protest against the entry into Yokosuka Port on the previous day of the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine Ohio.

Saito Kimiko of the Kanagawa Council against A & H Bombs (Kanagawa Gensuikyo) said, "No one in Kanagawa welcomes the U.S. aircraft carrier George Washington and the Ohio."

Muneta Hiroyuki, a prospective JCP candidate for the House of Representatives, criticized the ongoing moves to strengthen the functions of Yokosuka Port as a U.S. stronghold for preemptive attacks.

The JCP Kanagawa Prefectural Committee, JCP Kanagawa Prefectural Assembly members’ group, the JCP Yokosuka City Assembly members’ group, and JCP candidate for the House of Representatives Hatano Kimie jointly sent a written letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in protest against the Ohio’s port-call.

The Ohio is capable of carrying more than 150 Tomahawk cruise missiles as well as special operation forces at the same time. It has a powerful attack capability in its mission to support "global anti-terror wars."
