UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Japan and the Japan Association of UNHCR on June 16 offered the JCP a certificate in recognition of its effort to raise donations for cyclone victims in Myanmar, formerly Burma.
UNHCR Representative in Japan Takizawa Saburo and the Association’s secretary-general Nemoto Kaoru visited the Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo at the JCP head office.
Thanking the two officials for the certificate, Shii handed them 6.5 million in additional donations to cyclone victims in Burma.
Explaining the present situation in Burma, Nemoto said, “Based on two rescue operation centers in the delta, UNHCR has carried out various activities. At present, victims are returning to their homes so we need to provide them with materials to repair their houses.” - Akahata, June 17, 2008
