Zenroren and Rengo criticize Keidanren report

January 21, 2010
The National Federation of Trade Unions (Zenroren) and the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo) both criticized a report published on January 16 by the Japan Business Federation (Nippon Keidanren) Management/Labour Policy Committee.

Zenroren stated, “Keidanren neither gives consideration to the pains suffered by workers under the economic crisis nor reflects on its responsibility for the vulnerable economy depending largely on foreign demand.”

The Keidanren report, the Zenroren secretary general pointed out, does not meet the need to eliminate poverty and narrow the gap between the rich and the poor in order to realize a stable and sustainable society or the need to increase domestic demand and in order to help bail the nation out of a deflationary spiral.

Rengo also made public its “opinion” on the report, and criticized Nippon Keidanren for “being still stuck in its mindset of lowering labor costs.” Rengo states that Keidanren’s call for reviewing base wages will further deteriorate working conditions and destabilize labor-management relations of trust, and that this is unacceptable.
