Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on January 14 sent the following message to Haitian President Rene Preval to express sympathy for the earthquake victims:

Upon hearing the news of the disaster your country suffered due to the huge earthquake, we are deeply shocked. We would like to extend, through you, our heartfelt sympathy toward the families who suffered losses. Hoping that the rescue and assistance operations for the victims are carried out as quickly as possible, we promise that we will urge the Japanese government to extend swift assistance to these operations.

We hope that you will overcome the unprecedented disaster, and that the undertaking for recovery and construction will swiftly move forward.
