Voluntary coaching schools, which are organized by the Japanese Communist Party and the Democratic Youth League of Japan, have been gaining public favor in various parts of the country.
A group of DYLJ members in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture, held a free study support course in May. This is the second event following the first one at the end of last year, with the assistance of volunteers such as university students and retired high school teachers.
A third-year junior high school student, who had attended the first course as well, came to this voluntary class with his friends. “At the junior high school, it is difficult for me to get a chance to talk with teachers as they seem to be busy all the time. But here, I can freely ask tutors questions. Their explanations are easy to understand because they are all good teachers,” he said.
A 29-year-old female organizer said, “In this free course, children are never scolded for making a mistake. At any time they get tired of studying, they can take a break. When they don’t understand something, they can ask for help until they can understand.”
In Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, a JCP regional committee and a DYLJ branch jointly launched a similar coaching school this March.
An elderly man who read the school’s leaflet called the JCP committee and said, “My grandson in the fourth grade of elementary school was told by his teacher to learn again the contents for second and third graders.” A foreign mother told the committee that she has trouble teaching her child kanji (Chinese character) because she never learned it herself.
Tsuji Motomi, a member of the committee, said, “We want to keep holding this class in order to respond to the various requests from parents and children.”
