Shii attends farewell party for South Korean ambassador
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on May 29 attended a reception in Tokyo hosted by Shin Kak-soo, the outgoing South Korean ambassador to Japan.
Shii offered the ambassador words of appreciation for his two-year term in office. The chair also had relaxed talks with other guests, including representatives of the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan).
Ogata speaks at ICAPP conference
Japanese Communist Party Vice-Chair Ogata Yasuo attended a special meeting of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) held on May 30 and 31 in the Chinese ancient capital of Xi’an.
Ogata gave a speech about Japan’s anti-pollution movements at the session on the theme of environmental affairs.
The vice-chair attributed environmental deterioration to the nature of capitalism which places priority on profits. He said that large-scale popular movements against environmental disruption developed around Japan in the 1960s as its economy grew up at a high speed. He noted that in the face of growing pressure from mass struggles against air pollution, Japanese courts came down with decisions acknowledging companies’ illegal acts and administrative authorities’ nonfeasance.
Ogata also referred to the actual situation of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant which was crippled by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. He stated that now, two years after the accident, the cause of the disaster is yet to be determined and more than 150,000 local residents are still unable to return to their homes due to the radioactive contamination. He added that in order to foster international cooperation for environmental protection, it is essential for the Japanese government to admit its responsibility for causing incalculable sufferings to Asian peoples during its war of aggression.
On the second day, the conference closed the session by adopting the “Xi’an Initiative” calling for greater attention to green development.
