Zenroren holds monthly action for end to nuclear power

July 12, 2013
The National Confederation of Trade Unions (Zenroren) and its member unions on the 11th of every month have been holding an action seeking public support for a petition demanding total withdrawal from nuclear power generation at various locations across Japan.

Zenroren calls the action “Eleven Action” in memory of the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear crisis.

On July 11, activists from Zenroren member unions of municipal workers, teachers, and taxi drivers took part in this month’s “Eleven Action” in Ginza, a major shopping district in Tokyo. They handed out leaflets to passersby calling for a society without nuclear power plants.

Using a microphone, Zenroren Vice President Takahashi Shin’ichi criticized the Abe Cabinet for promoting nuclear energy as part of “Japan’s growth strategy”. “The need is for the government to take the position to have power companies stop reactivating their nuclear power plants,” he said.
