The Liberal Democratic Party has decided to impose on its Dietmembers and chapter heads who fail to reach their quota for recruiting 1,000 new members a penalty of 2,000 yen per shortfall.
At a general affairs meeting held on February 18, the party approved byelaws for its campaign to pursue a 1.2-million-member structure.
The byelaws require each LDP Dietmember and constituency chapter head to add 1,000 new members by the end of 2015. If they fall short of meeting this goal, they will have to pay 2,000 yen per shortfall in the quota as fines.
Those who substantially surpass the quota will receive preferential treatment in elections or in their posts, but low-performing members will face a downgrade in their positions, the LDP explained.
As Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo pointed out in the party’s 26th Congress, the runaway policies of the Abe government are going against the will of the general public and the world trend. The LDP itself is also aware of the weakening of its support basis.
