Shii sends congratulatory message to new Sri Lankan President

Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on January 13 sent a congratulatory message to the new Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena via the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tokyo. The full text of his message is as follows:

13th January 2015

H.E. Maithripala Sirisena,
President
Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

Your Excellency,

May I send you my warmest congratulations on your victory in the recent presidential election.

The news of your achievement reminded me of our meeting at the 8th General Assembly of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) in last September. I fondly remember that you, despite your busy schedule, kindly accommodated us and gave me an opportunity of having a very fruitful conversation between us.

I wish you, President of Sri Lanka, every success in further development of the economy, continuing promotion of people’s welfare, more democratic advancement of the society as well as promising diplomacy of your great nation. I also express my sincere hope that your government and our party continue to work together for peace in Asia and the world.

Kazuo Shii
Chairperson, Executive Committee,
Japanese Communist Party
Member of the House of Representatives of Japan

Shii speaks at Mindan’s New Year party

Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on January 14 made a speech at a New Year reception hosted by the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan), highlighting the importance for Japan to face up to its past history in order to develop friendship between Japan and South Korea.

Shii attended the party in Tokyo together with representatives of other political parties. He had relaxed conversations with other participants, including Mindan President Oh Gongtae.

In his address on behalf of the JCP, Shii expressed his hope that this year, marking the 70th year of the end of World War II and the 50th year of the normalization of diplomatic relations with South Korea, will be a turning point for building up a real friendship between the two nations. “To achieve this goal, it’s essential that Japan reflects on its history and sincerely owns up to its mistakes,” he said.

The JCP chair underscored the need to restore the human dignity of Japan’s wartime sex slaves euphemistically referred to as “comfort women”, including many Korean women. With regard to hate speech actions against Koreans rampant in Japan, Shii noted that the Japanese government should take decisive steps, including enacting legislation to regulate such actions. Attendees gave Shii a good round of applause.

Ogata meets with Cuban Ambassador

JCP Vice Chair Ogata Yasuo on January 15 held talks with Cuban Ambassador to Japan Marcos F. Rodriguez in Tokyo.

The two exchanged views on Japan’s recent general election in which the JCP made a remarkable advance and the planned negotiations between Havana and Washington to normalize bilateral diplomatic ties.
