Anti-base Okinawan legislators’ group formed

March 29, 2015
Okinawan legislators have united to block the construction of a new U.S. base in Nago’s Henoko area. On March 28, they set up a group consisting of 100 legislators from the state, prefectural, and municipal levels.

In the group’s inaugural meeting held on the same day, they resolved that in order to foil the central government’s plan to construct the new U.S. base in Okinawa, they need to play a leading role in residents’ struggles and local governments’ efforts and will strengthen cooperation with the prefectural government led by Governor Onaga Takeshi.

Governor Onaga delivered a speech in solidarity and expressed his hope that the group will contribute to creating a broader than ever anti-base movement.

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Akamine Seiken expressed his determination, saying, “The group will help spread Okinawan people’s opposition to the new U.S. base to other parts of Japan as well as across the world. Let’s support the governor firmly and put a stop the base construction project.”
