The Nago City Board of Education on July 7 started a test excavation to conduct research on buried cultural properties inside the premises of U.S. Marine Corps Camp Schwab in the city’s Henoko District, the planned construction site of a new U.S. base.
The test excavation will continue until February 2016 according to the city.
In February this year, an anchor stone, which was attached to an anchor as a weight during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, was found on Camp Schwab. The education board plans to apply to the U.S. military for more research to be conducted at the site where the item was found.
A resident participating in a sit-in protest outside the camp against the base construction said, “Now that an ancient anchor stone was found in the camp, the protection of cultural properties must be taken into account.”
