A female worker who was dismissed by a major manga publisher for whistleblowing in her lawsuit against the company on October 28 reached a court-mediated settlement in the Tokyo District Court.
When she worked at Akita Publishing Co., Ltd., Japan’s leading publisher of teenage manga magazines and books, between 2007 and 2011, she found out about the company’s dishonest action taken in regard to prizes awarded in a magazine sweepstakes and blew the whistle on this. However, she was made a scapegoat for the company’s failure and suffered a punitive dismissal.
The worker in 2011 took her case to court, seeking withdrawal of her dismissal and compensation for damages caused by workplace bullying by her supervisor.
In the court-mediated settlement, the publisher agreed to overturn its disciplinary action against the woman and pay settlement money to her.
At a press conference after the court settlement, the worker said, “As the company withdrew its disciplinary dismissal decision, I’ll be able to maintain my honor and dignity as a worker.” Citing that the publisher has yet to offer an apology to her and impose any punishment on the person who should have been punished for the misconduct regarding the sweepstakes, she said, “Corrupt practices in the company remain unchanged.”
