Union stages strike demanding withdrawal of dismissal of its chair

October 31, 2015
A Tokyo union for public-sector non-regular workers on October 30 staged a strike demanding that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government withdraw its dismissal of union members who worked at a Tokyo public vocational school as part-time instructors.

At the end of March, the Tokyo government outsourced a vocational school’s CAD course to the private sector and dismissed all 30 part-time lecturers including the union’s chair, Nakajima Syoko, and two other union members.

The union, which is affiliated with the Japan Federation of Prefectural and Municipal Workers’ Unions (Jichiroren), severely criticized the metropolitan government for targeting union activists for dismissal. The three union members filed a lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court, seeking their reinstatement. They have already begun a legal fight at the Tokyo Labor Relation Commission for official recognition of their dismissals as an unfair labor practice.

The union on the same day held a rally in front of the metropolitan government office building, with 123 union members and supporters taking part. The union’s secretary general, Matsuzaki Shinsuke, criticized the Tokyo government’s refusal to negotiate with the union. Union chair Nakajima stressed that in order to defend the union she will continue to fight until the Tokyo government revokes the union members’ dismissals.
