Shii urges PM to improve living conditions in temporary shelters for Kyushu quake victims

April 27, 2016
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on April 26 met with Prime Minister Abe Shinzo at his office and urged him to urgently implement measures to relieve victims from various hardships caused by the powerful earthquakes and the ongoing aftershocks that hit and continue to affect the Kyushu region.

JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira and the head of the ruling coalition partner Komei Party, Yamaguchi Natsuo, also attended the meeting.

Shii handed to PM Abe a written request regarding support for disaster victims which includes a measure to prevent disaster-related deaths. The JCP submitted the requests based on its day-to-day relief activities in Kumamoto Prefecture affected by the continuing quakes.

Shii pointed out that the disaster victims are living in harsh environments at temporary shelters without privacy and without adequate preparation for the coming summer heat. The JCP chair called on the prime minister to properly improve disaster victims’ living conditions under the government’s responsibility.

Asked for JCP’s cooperation for an early approval of a FY2016 supplementary budget, Shii said, “The JCP will cooperate if the government includes an additional budget exclusively to properly help affected people.” The PM expressed his intent to use the budget only for disaster relief.

Shii said, “You should take into careful consideration our requests when drafting the budget or respond to them without delay. You should use our proposal as a reference to planning disaster relief measures.” PM Abe just said, “We will consider your request.”

At the end of the meeting, Shii said, “I think disaster relief as well as reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts will need to continue for an indefinite amount of time. So, we’d better hold meetings to discuss the matter occasionally.” The PM agreed with Shii’s proposal.
