In expectation of bringing about a positive effect on territorial talks with Russia, Japan in 2014 launched projects based on the bilateral economic cooperation plan proposed by ex-PM Abe. However, these projects do not play a part in achieving the return of the currently Russia-held “northern territories”.
Former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo said, "I see no need for Japan's military offensive capabilities to be limited to enemy bases. Japan should be able to strike the center of the enemy's military operations."
Japanese Communist Party candidate Fujimoto Iseko won in the city assembly by-election in the suburban Tokyo city of Kiyose. The JCP became the largest political party, accounting for 30% of the 20-member city assembly.
