The Japanese Communist Party held a lecture meeting on August 3 in Tokyo to commemorate the 88th anniversary of the party’s founding. JCP Chair Shii Kazuo stated that the JCP has much to learn from the House of Councilors election in July.
The 2010 World Conference against A and H Bombs -- Hiroshima was held from August 4 - 6 in Hiroshima City. The opening plenary on August 4 was attended by 7,400 delegates from grass-roots organizations all over Japan.
The International Meeting of the 2010 World Conference against A and H Bombs, which was held from August 2 in Hiroshima City ended on August 4, adopted a declaration entitled “We call for action with the Hibakusha for a world without nuclear weapons.”
Hiroshima City Mayor Akiba Tadatoshi, in the Peace Declaration he read out at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial ceremony on August 6, demanded that the government “abandon holding to the U.S. nuclear umbrella.” However, Prime Minister Kan Naoto’s reply was that “nuclear deterrence is a necessity,” and anger at this statement is increasing among many Hiroshima citizens including the Hibakusha (A-bomb victims).
