Commenting on Pope Francis’ speeches in Hiroshima and Nagasaki appealing for the elimination of nuclear weapons, JCP Secretariat Head Koike said that the Japanese government should sincerely accept the Pope’s demand for a nuclear-free world.
In Hong Kong local elections, pro-democracy candidates overwhelmingly defeated pro-China parties. During the past few months, the JCP has kept demanding an end to the violent crackdown on civilian Hong Kong demonstrators.
The Japan-South Korea GSOMIA will survive for the time being. Even with this decision, however, the situation is still far from fundamentally resolving the worst bilateral relations between the two countries in the postwar period.
