United opposition candidate beats LDP incumbent in Tsuruoa mayoral race

October 17, 2017
In a precedent-setting victory, a united opposition candidate on October 15 won in the Tsuruoka City mayoral election in Yamagata Prefecture, defeating a Liberal Democratic Party-backed incumbent.

Before the election, Minagawa Osamu who is in his early 40s and a former official of the agriculture ministry, agreed with the local Japanese Communist Party to defend citizens’ interests and support the principle of Article 9 of the Constitution and successfully built a joint struggle between the JCP and the Democratic Party. As a result, he beat the 68-year-old LDP rival in his first challenge in the mayoral race.
