A U.S. Navy petty officer second class assigned to the U.S. Atsugi base (Kanagawa Pref.) was arrested on the spot for trespassing on the morning of February 2. Reportedly, the 27-year-old suspect was drunk.
On February 4, representatives of the Kanagawa prefectural committee of the Japanese Communist Party and local JCP assemblypersons visited the base to submit a statement of protest.
They demanded that the U.S. Navy find out the cause of the incident and take prevention measures. They also demanded the base closure to eliminate base-related accidents and crimes once and for all.
An official at the base in response said, "We are taking this incident very seriously."
