The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on June 19 adopted a petition calling for the introduction of a selective dual surname system with the majority vote of all political parties with the exception of the Liberal Democratic Party.
The petition was submitted by a civil group seeking the passage of legislation allowing married couples to decide whether to use the same surname or separate surnames. The petition points out that it is urgently necessary to realize the introduction of this system. It demands that the metropolitan government submit to the national government a written opinion to request a law revision to achieve this.
