The number of new COVID-19 infections in Tokyo had been between 50 and 60 over the last few days, but it reached 107 on July 2.
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo at a press conference in the Diet building on the same day said, "The national and Tokyo metropolitan governments should urgently discuss together what to do with this upsurge and should present a specific plan of action to the general public."
A government expert panel suggests that local governments ask residents for cooperation and request them to stay at home if the number of newly infected in the latest week hits 2.5 per 100,000 population.
Shii pointed out that the number of newly infected people in Tokyo over the past week until July 2 was 3.21. He said, "The situation of COVID-19 infection in Tokyo will have an influence on the entire nation. Specific measures must be taken without delay."
