The Japanese Communist Party Central Committee on December 15 held its second Plenum online due to the pandemic.
JCP Chair Shii Kazuo in his report on behalf of the Executive Committee proposed a “special campaign period” for creating a stronger party to achieve a major advance in the next general election which will last until the end of April 2021.
Explaining the proposal, Shii said, “As House of Representatives members’ four-year terms will expire in September of next year, the next general election will certainly be held in Autumn at the latest. At the same time, there is speculation that the Diet is highly likely to be dissolved for a snap election between April and September. Based on these assumptions, the Executive Committee decided to begin the special campaign period ending at the end of April as early as possible.” Shii called on all party members to work to build a stronger party during the “special campaign period” so that the party will achieve its goal of obtaining 8.5 million votes or 15% of total votes in the proportional representation blocs in the next general election.
Shii pointed out that the JCP, as another goal in the next general election, seeks to realize a change in government and establish a coalition government of opposition parties.
In this regard, Shii said that in the coming general election, the JCP will call on voters to support the party by presenting the party’s proposal on new government policies.
In the proposal, the JCP calls for:
- Putting an end to neoliberalism and establishing policies which eliminates inequalities by focusing on assistance to people’s livelihoods;
- Defending the Constitution and restoring constitutionalism, democracy, and pacifism;
- Changing the nation’s subservient diplomatic policy to a truly independent and peaceful one;
- Preventing global-scale environmental destruction and creating a socio-economic system which is in harmony with nature; and
- Establishing a gender-equal society and politics that respect diversity and individual dignity.
