SHII Kazuo
Chair, Japanese Communist Party
Member of the House of Representatives of Japan
February 1, 2021
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on February 1 issued the following comments on the recent developments in Myanmar:
Myanmar’s military seized power on February 1 in a coup d’état, detaining Foreign Minister and State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other elected leaders. The seizure of power by the armed forces, alongside the unlawful detainment of duly elected leaders of the National League for Democracy (NLD) who won a resounding victory and consolidated their power in the General Elections this past Autumn, is an outrageous act that fundamentally denies public opinion and democracy of the people of Myanmar, and henceforth, the JCP strongly condemns this coup.
The Myanmar armed forces need to immediately release Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi and others, and return the government to the NLD administration.
