Hong Kong’s pro-democracy paper Apple Daily, famous for its consistent stance of criticizing the government as citizens’ media, on June 24 issued its final edition, ending its 26-year-long history.
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on this day on Twitter wrote, “Under the oppression by the Chinese government with the use of the National Security Law, Apple Daily was forced to close, which is suppression of media freedom in Hong Kong. I lodge a strong protest against such a brutal act.”
In addition, he in his tweet demanded that China immediately stop its human-rights suppression in Hong Kong as it constitutes a violation of international accords protecting human rights including freedom of speech and the press, which China agreed upon, as well as a breach of China’s international commitment to the “One Country, Two Systems” policy.
