The Japanese Communist Party Hiroshima City Assemblypersons' group on August 12 criticized International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach for not saying anything about the abolition of nuclear weapons in his speech made at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in July.
The assemblypersons said, "Why did he come to the A-bombed city of Hiroshima?"
The JCP group also criticized Bach for rejecting Hiroshima's request to call on Olympic athletes to offer a minute of silence at the Olympic Games on August 6, the day of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
During his visit to Hiroshima, the Hiroshima prefectural and city governments shouldered all the costs of 3.79 million yen for guarding him. Nakahara Hiromi, head of the JCP Hiroshima City Assemblypersons' group, said, "He made light of the A-bombed city. The IOC must pay back the money for his visit to Hiroshima."
