August 14 & 29, 2021
Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Councilors Yamazoe Taku on August 28 appeared on a TV Asahi political debate program and pointed to the need to create temporary medical facilities in order to prevent coronavirus deaths at home.
He demanded that the national government retract its decision to ask COVID-19 patients, except patients with severe symptoms, to attempt recovery at home, adding, "It is indispensable for the government to provide necessary medical services and take measures to prevent coronavirus deaths at home."
Yamazoe pointed out that only 41.9 billion yen out of the 1.5-trillion-yen emergency aid have been given to affected businesses and individuals so far, criticizing the government for being overly slow in providing adequate compensation and for neglecting to enhance the PCR testing capacity. He stated that the holding of an extraordinary Diet session is urgently needed in order to decide on adequate budgets and appropriate measures.
As of August 12, the number of coronavirus-related deaths at home or in elderly facilities is 567 in total since March 2020, according to the National Policy Agency.
