Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on January 11 participated in a New Year reception held by the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan) in Tokyo.
Starting his speech by saying “Happy New Year!” in Korean, Shii expressed his gratitude for the significant amount of communication last year among the JCP, the Mindan Central Headquarter, and the South Korean Embassy.
When Shii reported that all JCP lawmakers have become members of the Japan-South Korean Parliamentarians’ Union, he received a large round of applause.
On behalf of the JCP, Shii expressed firm determination to realize “the return of Korean cultural assets, including the Chosen Oushitsu Gigi (Joseon Dynasty Uigwe), to South Korea” and “voting rights in local elections to be given to permanent foreign residents” within this year in coordination with all the other supporting parties.
Regarding the act of military provocation conducted last year by North Korea, Shii quoted South Korean President Lee Myung-bak who said, “The door is still open for an inter-Korean dialogue,” and emphasized the need to make efforts to resolve the problem in a diplomatic manner.
At the reception, Shii exchanged greetings with Mindan Central HQ President Chung Jin, South Korean Ambassador to Japan Kwon Chul hyun, Head of the Korean-Japan Parliamentarians’ Union Lee Sang Deuk, and various other participants.
