A candidate in her 40s, whom the Japanese Communist Party supported, won the Minato Ward mayoral election in Tokyo on June 2, defeating an incumbent in his 70s who was backed by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komei Party.
The mayor-elect is Seike Ai (independent), a former Minato Ward Assemblymember.
In Tokyo, the defeat of the LDP’s official candidate follows the LDP defeat in the Meguro Ward mayoral election in April and in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly by-election in May.
