JCP Executive Committee Chair Tamura calls on JCP Dietmembers to fight through Oct. 27 general election against Ishiba regime

October 2, 2024
Liberal Democratic Party President Ishiba Shigeru, who was elected as the new prime minister at the extraordinary Diet session convened on October 1, plans to dissolve the House of Representatives on October 9 for a snap election with the official campaign announcement on October 15 and the voting day on October 27.

Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko, at a general assembly of all JCP Dietmembers on October 1, criticized Ishiba’s maneuvering to dissolve the Lower House for the sake of LDP interests.

Tamura said, “The extraordinary Diet session is supposed to hold a thorough debate on important national policy issues with the new prime minister and the new government in order to clarify the issues for the general election.”

She called Ishiba’s strategy a complete flip-flop because he himself had called this approach partisan politics during the LDP presidential election.

Tamura, in regard to the LDP proposal to hold the extraordinary Diet session for nine days, pointed out that such a short period of time “cannot present the general public with sufficient information for making an informed decision” in the general election.

The JCP demands that a supplementary budget to support victims of the Noto Peninsula earthquake and torrential rainfall disaster and to reconstruct the affected areas be compiled; a compensation law for victims of the former Eugenic Protection Act be enacted; the truth behind the LDP slush-fund scandal be fully uncovered; and systematic corruption between the LDP and the former Unification Church be thoroughly clarified. The JCP states that these will be the top priorities for discussion in the extraordinary Diet ssession.

Tamura said, “For this purpose, the JCP demands at least 30 days of thorough discussions in the session.” However, Ishiba intends to dissolve the Lower House after only nine days in session. Tamura said, “It is because he and his new Cabinet do not want to engage in a serious Diet debate.”

She called on all JCP Dietmembers to confront head-on the LDP-Komei government and PM Ishiba, who is calling for the creation of an Asian version of NATO and the sharing of U.S. nuclear weapons.
