JCP EC Chair Tamura attends dinner for France’s LGBT+ rights ambassador

November 1, 2024
Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko, as a member of a cross-party parliamentarians’ league tackling issues related to LGBTQ rights, on October 30 attended a dinner held in Tokyo for the visiting French Ambassador for the Rights of LGBT+ Persons, Jean Marc Berthon.

This event was hosted by French Ambassador to Japan Philippe Setton.

Tamura welcomed Berthon’s visit to Japan and expressed her respect for the French government efforts to deal with LGBT+ persons’ rights as part of international human rights issues. Citing that the Tokyo High Court earlier on the day ruled the ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional, Tamura said, “The legislative branch’s response to this court decision is called into question. Our party will work to push the Diet to start deliberations on a cross-party lawmakers’ bill regarding same-sex marriage.”

The French LGBT+ Ambassador talked about efforts and challenges in France and other countries regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage and the elimination of discrimination against LGBTQ people.

Along with Tamura, other members of the cross-party parliamentarians’ league attended the dinner.
