Japanese Communist Party Vice Chair Ogata Yasuo on June 2 talked with Iranian Embassy Counsellor Siavosh Jafari at the JCP head office.
Counsellor Jafari explained Iran’s position regarding its nuclear program. He criticized the draft resolution calling for sanctions on Iran which was submitted to the United Nations Security Council immediately after Iran agreed with Turkey and Brazil on shipments of low-enriched uranium.
Ogata pointed out that the issue should be resolved through peaceful negotiations. He said that the JCP opposes the emergence of new nuclear-weapon states including Iran, and that if Iran maintains that it has no nuclear weapon development program but aims at the peaceful use of nuclear energy, Iran is requested to provide concrete evidence to dispel any suspicions.
Ogata also explained how the JCP assesses the outcome of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference.
