Japanese Communist Party member of the House Councilors Ito Gaku on November 28 attended an “LGBTQ+Diplomat reception” held at the Embassy of Mexico in Tokyo.
As a member of the cross-party parliamentarians’ league on global LGBT rights, Ito took part in the reception at the invitation of the embassies in Japan of both Mexico and Germany, co-chairs of the Equal Rights Coalition (ERC).
The ERC has 44 member states, but Japan is not a member.
Ito exchanged greetings with Mexican Ambassador to Japan Melba Pria and Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy in Japan Martin Huth, and interacted with reception participants.
Some asked Ito why the Japanese government does not join the ERC and remains an observer. Ito responded, “Our party will continue to press the government to work to improve the rights and lives of sexual minorities.”
