Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Motomura Nobuko took part in a special meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi held by the Parliamentary League for UNHCR in the Diet building on November 27.
Grandi spoke about the global refugee crisis, support from the private sector, and other topics. Explaining what is needed for sufficient humanitarian assistance to refugees, the senior UN official pointed to the need of an expansion of financial support by the international community and an increase in the number of countries receiving refugees.
JCP Motomura talked about Japan’s strict stance in regard to recognizing asylum seekers as refugees and asked Grandi what role he thinks Japan should play in contributing to solving the refugee problem.
