Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Tamura Takaaki on December 3, as a member of the cross-party parliamentarians’ league for carbon neutrality, participated in a press conference held in Tokyo by a group of companies aiming for a decarbonized Japan.
The corporate group, Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP), proposes that Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions be reduced by at least 75% by 2035 from the 2013 level, based on the IPCC’s 1.5 degrees Celsius goal. However, the Japanese government is presenting a 60% cut goal to be discussed in a government panel on energy policies.
According to the JCLP, many of the panel members are from the large GHG emitters in the steel and electric power industries. Matsuo Yusuke, JCLP secretary general, said, “The panel has no climate experts or scientists. The GHG emitting industries, in effect, will make the decision regarding Japan’s reduction target.”
