A group of ten A-bomb survivors and second-generation Hibakusha, visiting Oslo to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, on December 11, visited the Japanese Embassy in Oslo to demand that Japan sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
They pointed out that Nihon Hidankyo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for tenaciously giving their testimonies about the inhumanity of the atomic bombings, particularly because the situation in regard to the threat of the use of nuclear weapons is critical now. They emphasized the need for Japan, the only A-bombed country in the world, to become a Party to the UN Convention prohibiting nuclear weapons.
A representative of Nihon Hidankyo’s second-generation survivors’ committee requested that Japan at the very least take part as an observer in the third meeting of the State Parties slated for March next year.
