Calling for imposing sanctions on Israel for carrying out genocide in Gaza and calling for recognizing Palestine as a state, a rally took place at the House of Councilors members’ office building on December 12.
The rally was organized by civil groups, such as the All-out Action Committee and the Network against Japan Arms Trade (NAJAT), working to end Israel’s campaign of genocide in Gaza, and was attended by opposition lawmakers.
Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo, JCP Secretary General Koike Akira, JCP Upper House member Yamazoe Taku, and JCP Lower House member Motomura Nobuko were among the legislators present.
Delivering a speech in solidarity, Shii said that at international meetings in August and in November, he appealed for the need to take action to stop Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The international meetings Shii memtioned were: the Roza Luxemburg Foundation-hosted international peace conference in Berlin in August and the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) General Assembly in Phnom Penh in November.
Shii said that the Japanese government’s stance toward the Gaza issue has come under scrutiny, and added that Japan should take meaningful action to work to put a stop to Israel’s lawlessness as it voted for UN resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and calling for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories.
In this regard, Shii said that the Japanese government should urge Israel to discontinue its unlawful strikes on aid facilities operated by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip, and demanded that the Japanese government cancel its plan to purchase Israeli-made drones without delay. In addition, he said that as a member state of the International Criminal Court, Japan should fulfill its obligation to cooperate in enforcing the ICC arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
More importantly, Shii said that the Japanese government should tell the United States that it should stop providing military and diplomatic support to Israel.
Along with the JCP CC Chair, lawmakers of other opposition parties, including the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Social Democratic Party, the “Reiwa” party, and the parliamentary group Okinawa Whirlwind, delivered speeches in solidarity.
