An Osaka prefectural workers’ union, a member of the Japan Federation of Prefectural and Municipal Workers’ Unions (Jichiroren), on January 14 submitted to Governor Yoshimura Yoshifumi a written request demanding that the governor not mobilize even more prefectural workers for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai World Expo amid chronic labor shortages.
The Osaka prefectural government on January 1 issued an order to transfer eight workers to Expo-related jobs while showing no intent to recruit new staff to fill the vacancies caused by the transfer of eight workers.
The Jichiroren-affiliated union in its document protested against the prefectural authorities’ employee reassignment without provision for supplemental staff, and stressed that such an act will impose heavier work burdens on the remaining staff. The union pointed out that a serious labor shortage stemmed from the continuing job cuts since the late 1990s which has made it impossible for prefectural government workers to work under decent conditions, and called on the governor to increase the number of workers.
