JCP Tokyo metropolitan assemblymembers demand dismissal of Fuji TV’s ‘big boss’ as Tokyo metropolitan foundation chair

January 29, 2025
The Japanese Communist Party Tokyo Metropolitan Assemblymembers’ Group on January 28 demanded that Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko press the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture to dismiss Fujisankei Communications Group Chairman Hieda Hisashi as its chairperson and as president of Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, one of its cultural facilities.

Regarding Fuji TV for which Hieda serves as an advisor, a male employee reportedly played a role in the alleged sexual assault of a woman by a former TV personality. It is also reported that the TV station has been using its female employees to entertain business clients and celebrities.

The 19-member JCP group stated, “Sexual violence that takes advantage of hierarchical and power relationships is a serious violation of human rights that tramples on women’s dignity and robs them of advancing in their careers and lives.”

The JCP assemblypersons pointed out that Hieda has a responsibility to find out and explain what had actually happened and to prevent a recurrence. However, he was not present at a press conference held by the broadcaster’s executives. The JCP assemblypersons’ group criticized him for evading his due responsibility.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture and Tokyo Bunka Kaikan play a role in Tokyo’s cultural administration. Respect for human rights is supposed to be a precondition in their activities.

The JCP assemblypersons again demanded the removal of Hieda from the two organizations. A Tokyo Metropolitan government official just responded by saying, “We will keep a close eye on the investigation being carried out by a Fuji TV-set third-party investigating body.”
