2025 January 29 - February 4 [JCP]

All 11 JCP candidates elected to 7 municipal assemblies

February 4, 2025
In local assembly elections held on February 2, the Japanese Communist Party put up eleven candidates in five cities and two towns, and all of them were elected.

The Kishiwada City Assembly election (Osaka Pref.) took place following the dissolution of the assembly after a motion of no confidence against Mayor Nagano Kohei was passed over the mayor’s “sexual assault” of a woman. The JCP harshly criticized his conduct and called for a change in the city government currently led by the ruling “Nippon Ishin no Kai” party. The JCP defended its four incumbent seats and increased both the number and percentage of votes it received. In contrast, the “Ishin” party lost two seats from the previous four seats to two.

In the Kashihara City (Nara Pref.) Assembly election, the JCP increased by one seat to two. In Yamaga City (Kumamoto Pref.), a JCP incumbent defended her seat. In Iwade City (Wakayama Pref.) and Nishinoomote City (Kagoshima Pref.), the JCP secured its incumbent seats. The party won a new seat in Tabuse Town (Yamaguchi Pref.) and retained its existing seat in Ozu Town (Kumamoto Pref.).
