Japanese Communist Party Executive Committee Chair Tamura Tomoko on February 6 said that the Japanese government displayed a shameful behavior when U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements suggesting that the U.S. take “ownership” of Palestine’s Gaza Strip in violation of the UN Charter came under fire in the international community.
At a House of Representatives Budget Committee meeting on February 6, Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi, when asked about the government’s stance on this issue, only said that the government will see how things proceed.
Tamura noted that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres criticized Trump’s controversial remarks by saying, “It is vital to stay true to the bedrock of international law. It is essential to avoid any form of ethnic cleansing.” She went on to note that Germany, the U.K., France, China, and Middle East countries spoke out against Trump’s idea from the viewpoint of international law.
Tamura pointed out that the Japanese government, with its position of being overly submissive to the U.S., failed to criticize Trump’s statements for clearly violating international law. She said that in a Japan-U.S. summit meeting to be held on February 7 in Washington, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru should voice an objection to Trump’s Gaza statements and other actions and proclamations which run counter to international law.
