GSDF shell may have landed outside training site

February 5, 2025

The Ground Self-Defense Force on February 4 announced that a 155mm artillery shell may have landed outside the GSDF Aibano maneuvering area (Takashima City, Shiga Pref.) during firing drills.

The Japanese Communist Party Takashima City Assemblymembers’ Group on the same day submitted a letter of protest to the GSDF Camp Nihonbara (Okayama Pref.) to which the artillery unit which took part in the training belongs as well as to the GSDF Camp Imazu (Takashima City, Shiga Pref.) where the training ground is located.

Moriwaki Toru and Fukui Setsuko, JCP Takashima City assemblypersons, said, “The GSDF should have confirmed the safety of 46,000 Takashima residents first when it notified the municipality of the shooting failure.”

A Camp Imazu official said in response, “About 200 GSDF members are looking for where the shell landed.”
