Seeking to achieve the success of the Third Meeting of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Councilors Kira Yoshiko and JCP member of the former House of Representatives Kasai Akira on February 27 held talks with Kazakhstan Ambassador to Japan Yerlan Baudarbek-Kozhatayev at the Embassy of Kazakhstan which will chair the TPNW meeting.
Kira and Kasai will attend the meeting scheduled to begin on March 3 at the UN Headquorters in NYC.
Kira and Kasai expressed their respect for Kazakhstan’s activities as the TPNW meeting chair. They noted that the meeting will discuss efforts to broaden the opportunities to listen to the testimonies of A-bomb survivors (Hibakusha) and nuclear-test victims, overcome the nuclear deterrence theory, and give shape to support for nuclear-test victims and Hibakusha. They expressed their hope for Kazakhstan’s initiative to promote these efforts.
The Ambassador in response noted that not only Hibakusha but also victims of former Soviet Union’s nuclear tests at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan and victims of the U.S. nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll, known in Japan as the tragedy of Daigo Fukuryu Maru (Lucky Dragon #5), experienced the horrific impact of nuclear arms. He said that it is important to share their opinions and activities with the world. He expressed his intent to work together with the JCP on common tasks as well as his hope for the JCP’s cooperation at the meeting.
