Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Councilors Kira Yoshiko and JCP member of the former House of Representatives Kasai Akira on February 27 met with Cuban Ambassador to Japan Gisela Beatriz Garcia Rivera at the Cuban Embassy in Tokyo to discuss and together work for the success of the Third Meeting of State Parties to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
Kira and Kasai conveyed their respect for the Cuban government which has played an important role in universalizing the TPNW, and expressed their determination to work hard to realize the Japanese government’s participation in the treaty. They said, “This year marks the 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings and the dangerous situation over nuclear weapons continues. Under this situation, the success of the TPNW meeting will send a strong message that the use of nuclear weapons should be prohibited and that such weapons should be banned and abolished. We’d like to enhance our cooperation with Cuba.”
The ambassador responded by saying that all nuclear weapons should be eliminated. While acknowledging the importance of preventing the spread of nuclear arms and arms technology, the ambassador said that the abolition of nuclear weapons is vital, and expressed her intent to team up with the JCP to the maximum extent. She said that she will collaborate with the Cuban permanent representative to the UN by sharing the JCP demand.
