The Japanese Communist Party Osaka Prefectural Committee on April 13 issued a statement protesting the forced opening of the “Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai” while neglecting the safety of the Expo site.
The venue is located in artificial island Yumeshima, which is created on landfill waste, in Osaka Bay. Methane generation from underground is a concern there.
The statement points out that proposed school excursions and trips to the Expo have not relieved the safety concerns of relevant school staff and parents, and calls on municipalities to cancel school field trips to the Expo.
The statement expresses concern that the burden of any loss due to poor sales of Expo tickets would be placed on Osaka residents, stating that such a situation should not happen.
The statement criticizes the national government and the “Nippon Ishin no Kai” party for working in tandem to force the holding of the Expo on Yumeshima Island with a common goal of building a casino-centric IR by developing the Osaka Bay area.
It demands that the Expo authorities withdraw the exclusion of “Akahata” from news coverage of the Expo and give top priority to the safety and lives of visitors during the event.
