Tokyo Governor Ishihara Shintaro at a press conference on February 18 said, “Japan did a stupid thing by establishing the Three Non-nuclear Principles (not to manufacture, possess, or allow nuclear weapons to be brought into Japan).”
Regarding Japan’s possession of nuclear weapons, Ishihara stated, “It’s only natural to discuss this with high level officials.”
Pointing a finger at Russia, China, and North Korea, the well-known rightist governor went on to say, “Japan is the only country in the world that has nuclear-capable countries clearly hostile to it in its neighborhood.”
He argued, “An arms buildup will enable Japan to be outspoken in regard to territorial issues.”
Declaring, “In the first place, I’m a nuclear weapons advocate,” he added, “Japan should also conduct nuclear weapons simulations (like N-powers do) on computers. I can’t trust the United Nations at all.”
