Tokyo Governor Ishihara Shintaro again justified Japan’s past war of aggression on September 2, when he said, “I strongly oppose the judgment that ‘Japan’s war was the historical mistake because war in general is evil’.”
Asked by reporters what he will try to destroy in the “destructive education reform” he announced in the gubernatorial election in April and the metropolitan assembly in June, Ishihara said, “There is no need to ask. (The present education) has unilaterally forced a certain historical perspective on the war.” The governor added that Japan’s war led to the liberation of Asian countries.
In a metropolitan assembly meeting in February, Ishihara said, “What it said was never wrong,” referring to the prewar Imperial Rescript on Education that forced the people to offer their lives in order to defend the emperor in the event of war.
