2011 September 28 - October 4 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

Sasebo City Assembly adopts resolution against restart of Genkai NPP

October 2, 2011
The Sasebo City Assembly in Nagasaki Prefecture on September 30 unanimously adopted a resolution in protest against the resumption of operations of the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), located 30km from the city.

The resolution urges the government and Kyushu Electric Power Co. to not restart the Genkai NPP, hosted by Genkai Town in Saga Prefecture, without the consent of the surrounding municipalities and their residents.

It also calls for the expansion of the emergency planning zone (EPZ), where stronger disaster-prevention measures are imposed, from the current 8-10km radius of the NPP.

The resolution was jointly petitioned by the local branches of the Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Gensuikyo) and the Japan Peace Committee, and then submitted to the city assembly with the mediation of Yamashita Chiaki, representative of the Japanese Communist Party at the local assembly. A similar petition was submitted in June but was voted down.
