Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on November 13 called on voters in Fukushima to realize with the JCP a people-oriented reconstruction from the massive earthquake and subsequent nuclear accident during his speeches in 5 cities in the prefecture, where the prefectural assembly election will take place on the 20th of this month.
In their election campaigns, JCP candidates are making the following four demands: the national government must make all-out efforts to clean up radiation contamination and secure safe food; full compensation must be paid for damages caused by the nuclear accident; secure necessary funds for reconstruction without increasing taxes for ordinary people; and decommission all nuclear reactors in Fukushima and create a nation free from nuclear power generation.
Shii in his speech stated that prefectural assembly members of the JCP, jointly working with the National Federation of Farmers Movement (Nominren), had direct negotiations with Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) and make the utility company promise to fully compensate for damages peach and persimmon farmers incurred. “With the advance of the JCP, let us force TEPCO to cover the costs for all damages,” he said.
Currently having 3 seats in the prefectural assembly, the JCP is striving to win 5 or more seats in the election. It has put up 6 candidates and supports one independent candidate.
