Residents of Kanagawa Prefecture on March 14 made representations to a local defense bureau, calling for a halt to construction of additional housing complexes for the U.S. forces in the prefecture’s Ikego district.
The South Kanto Defense Bureau plans to build an additional 385 housing units in the U.S. Navy’s residential area in the Ikego district that stretches between Zushi and Yokohama cities in Kanagawa.
Local residents have opposed the construction plan, arguing that it would further destroy the forest of Ikego and lead to strengthening and perpetuating the U.S. bases the prefecture is hosting.
During the representations, a leader of the residents’ group urged that Japan’s national budget should rather be put to use for reconstruction from the 3.11 disaster.
