Former Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro in an NHK program broadcast on March 30 admitted that the foreign ministry explained to him as prime minister about a secret Japan-U.S. pact on the bringing-in of nuclear weapons into Japan and that the knowledge was passed on to his successor.
Nakasone’s statement means that his Diet statement at the time that entries of nuclear-laden vessels should be rejected was not based on reality.
Concerning the consistency between the secret pact and the Three Non-nuclear Principles, Nakasone said, “The security system will not work properly if Japan literally observes the three principles and rejects any transit of nuclear-laden vessels.”
